Has anyone thought about running the alternator from the camshaft instead of the crank? You'd need a bigger pulley but wouldn't it eliminate a lot of clearance problems?

External gl 1200 stator

Thank you for all of the info. and pics and guidance. There is a lot there and you have addressed the issued at hand. I appreciate sharing our experience. I am not really altogether set up to do a lot of the modification work. Is there a kit already fabricated to make the installation easier? I have an 86 SEi gl 1200. Is there extra noise from the alternator running and since it looks like the alternator some what blocks once side for air flow, is there any overheating problems or does it take longer for the fan to cool the engine?

There used to be a full kit called the Poor Boy kit.

it was designed by Don Pigot

his forum name is 'Poor Boy'

he is getting on in age now, I have no idea if he still supplies parts.

Looking at that thread, he has not been online in a long time.

There once was a kit that included a special left side belt cover and mounted an alternator face to face with that left side cam gear, but it never seemed to "take off" as it wasn't real pretty, and many had concerns for wear and tear on that same belt. I was gonna do a poor boy mod if I did anything, but I cut her loose.
