What with my horrible (sorry, insanely horrible) gas mileage, and the probable need for a full=on carb rebuild, I am thinking of skipping the step of rebuilding my 79 carbs and going straightaway to a GL1100 set. What are your experiences in doing so? Thanks for any advice you can pass on.The other thing is that I could spring for the $25US or so air cut valve rebuild and see where that gets me.

I'd do the rebuild first, if it doesn't work out you won't be out of pocket too much. I've seen a number of 1000s with carbs from the 1100. It almost always fixes the idling and low speed hesitation, chucking and all that. But at speed you can get flat spots when opening the throttle. It's not a magical ciure for all the GL1000s problems but is close enough, from what various owners have expressed.
