My money is on someone's having stripped the threads. It might be possible to install a Helicoil if there's enough meat and deptharound the screw hole, they do make some pretty small ones. In a pinch it might be possible to keep things working awhile with some Permatex (#1 hard setting) to seal the float bowl while you look on eBay or somewhere else for another carb.
