Could you folks help me with a couple of questions?

On a '81 GL 1100 do you have to replace the gasket when you remove the valve covers for an adjustment? Where is a good place to buy just these gaskets?

I'm also dropping the radiator to remove some surface rust and repaint. I've read that removing the thermostat housing is the way to go. Can you use silicone for a replacement gasket here or should I just use a replacement gasket (assuming it gets spoiled on removal). And where do you buy this critter?

Ok I lied three questions:

Have any of you used Gunson's Colortune spark plugs. I must say it has me very curious. No more sticking a wet finger in the air while you adjust the mixture.:goofygrin:

Thanks for all the replies. I will try to run down the o-ring and gaskets. My 81 Gl1100 was asleep for several years. I bought it as a parts bike for another 81 1100 that I'm restoring....that is until I ran a compression test and determined it had a very healthy set of lungs (170 psi). Rebuilt the carbs (hard way) and she fired right up. Now I'm going through everything to get it ready for the road and for sale as the the original bike is also almost finished.

The Colortune really fascinates me because its the next best thing to an exhaust analyzer.

Its a transparent spark plug that allows you to see the color of the combustion flame "real time". Yellow is rich and blue is the proper color. The run about $60 to $70 but they are out of the 12mm sizes for the next 5 weeks. They are made in the UK and distributed by the same folks that make Carbtune which btw is awsome better that the dial gauges and no mercury.
