Vetter Headlight same as OEM? GL1000

Hello again, everyone. Second post here.
This time I did some research before posting, so hopefully I have avoided embarrasing myself.

I have removed a bit of weight off my '79 gl1000, including the vetter fairings and side bags, rear fender, etc...
My question is; can I bolt the headlight that was on the vetter fairing back into the oem housing? It looks to be the same size, but looks like it mounts into the bucket differently. I can manage the wiring myself, but everywhere I look for information does not specify if you can swap the headlight back to stock.
I assume, from what I have tinkered around with, that I will need to order some kind of mounting or trim ring that fits the headlight back into the bucket? Or do I need to strip parts off the headlight to make it fit back in? The headlight is physically the same size, I guess i am just lost as to how you put it back on the stock bucket.
I hope this isn't a subject that's been beaten to death, everywhere I look produces little help.
Thanks in advance, guys.

I'm quoting you, but don't quote me.....
I'm relatively certain the headlight trim rings are different. Did you have a big rubber diaphragm covering the stock headlight bucket?
I removed the Vetter fairing from my '78 and reused the headlight, bucket and trim ring from the Vetter.

Here's a pic:

Kind of hard to decipher what you want to do. Does it have the original headlight bucket still mounted to the forks? If so the lens out of the vetter will fit it. If you are missing the rim that will not fit from the vetter. I have seen the complete vetter headlight bucket bolted to the stock fork ears.
The Bulb is the same the housing is different.
WHen I removed the Vetter from my 75 GL1000, I ended up using the headlight housing from a 75 CB 750.

I couldn't get the vetter headlight to fit where the stock headlight goes. Bought aa real pretty one of Evil bay for $45
Yeah i have the stock bucket, no diaphram. The headlight fits, but I was seeing conflicting info about the trim rings working or not. I couldnt get it to work, and couldnt find a reasonable price on a trim ring so I picked up a vintage Internation Harvester tractor Foglight from my landlord that i think I am going to convert over to H4 internals. downsizing to a 5 3/4 inch unit from the stock 7, but the H4 bulb should more than make up for the downsize. I probably couldve MADE the vetter ring work with some engineering (self-tapping screws hehe), but i dont really want to molest any parts on this bike, in case i ever want to sell off bits and peices or return it to stock. thanks for the info, guys. good stuff.
I might be conviced to buy a trim ring if someone can seduce me with a good price haha!
