Water pump on `98 S.E.

I replaced the water pump on my `98 S.E. yesterday. Not leaking at all now. I took the old water pump apart to see if the impeller shaft is loose like I heard it would be. Still feels tight wiith no side to side movement. Has a slight squeek when you turn the impeller. There was evedence of antifreeze and oil leaking out of weephole. Is it possible my pump is still good, and I just needed a new "O" ring on the water pump? Has anyone here replaced their water pump on a 1500? What did your impeller shaft feel like?

It's entirely possible that on occasion a WP gets replaced when the cause of the leak is the external orings. If you don't mind doing the job twice on most occasions I suppose you could try that first. I've replaced quite a few 1500 WP's and it's not unusual that there's no obvious fault (the squeak seems wrong though).

If you replace alot of seals on motorcycles...fork...engine...you'll make the observation that in many cases there's nothing visible wrong with the leaking seal.
I think you got your money's worth out of the pump if that was the first time for replacement. My 88 was 17rys old and only 68k on it when mine was leaking at the weep hole and drops on the floor. Mine started leaking 2 days after i bought it and i was kind of glad it did. I didn't have to worry about it for a while.
Your 98 at 15yrs old and 145k on it. Probably more about age than mileage it seems. Now you don't have to worry about it for a long time. One less thing to go wrong on a long trip.
I am not going to try to use old water pump again. Bolt twisted off holding halves together when I tried to split halves. I am not going to try to get it out of water pump housing. Long bolt also twisted off going into block. That one was fun to get out. Have anti seize on pump bolts now. The sqeek I mentioned was also present in the new pump. Kind of like a tight nylon seal and tight bearings?
