Hi, I have a 81 GL1100 which has a 82 GL1100 motor in it and is missing the coil pack. What year coil should I use? I have noticed the 81 coil does not have a resistor on it, and the 82 coil does have a resistor on it. As far as I know, the bike wiring is original. Are there any other electrical components I need to replace besides the coil situation? Thanks for any insight.

The 1981 (82) GL1100 uses the AW82 TRI coil. The are as hard a hens teeth to buy as Honda has discontinued them and the 83 GL100 Aspencade coil which is a different part (I learned after I started looking for them).

If your local part house does not have one, I can sell you anextra (used) I haveat my cost ($40 US) plus shipping from Richmond VA to you. Email to [email protected]

:gunhead:Note: Tubwinger and Silicon Sam are right- the BW82 is the coil you should use. I just got my bike out of the shop today (expert carb rebuild and new tire) and talked with my mechanic about this. Hesaid that the BW82 is the one you should use if you can get it.

From what I've seen and had experience with, the '80 and '81 use
the AW82 and the '82 and '83 use the BW82. The BW82 coils are
thicker around as well as the resistor added. Just as you
noticed. I may a set of both laying around.

I would use the '82 coil, and I would seriously doubt any wiring
changes because of that. The original Honda GL1100 shop manual
would be a wise investment.

I have the Honda Goldwing service manual and looking at the schematics, the 81 shows no resistor on the coils and the 82 shows the resistor on the coils. So, the BW82 looks like the one to get. Thanks.
