What might this old harley be worth

I'm helping a friend sell a 1973 XLH superglide 1200 with 15,000 miles. He never rides any more and neither one of us have any idea what it is worth so I figure among you expert riders someone might know if it is anything special or just a trade in :)

I have pictures at work, I've seen the bike the one time he rode it to work and it's like stepping into the past.

Hoping there are some wingers that know some... what would it be... hoggers?

Thanks-

Jim

this is a confusing post. an XLH is a Sportster model. a Superglide is a Big Twin model, which makes the 1200 a correct size for that year.
if it is a sportster, a really good clean model may bring $2000 -2500 maybe. they aren't real valuable(right foot shift).
a good big twin usually will go for $5000 plus, depending on condition and and what has been done to it.
a few years back, i sold a 73 big twin bagger, with many upgrades, still only got $7400 .

Wasn't AMF making HD's at this time? I am not sure but if they were the bike wouldn't be worth much.

yes, AMF was the owner at that time, however, many give them a bad rap. if it weren't for AMF at the time Harley Davidson would have folded.
yes, quality was poor ,compared to the Japanese. then again, most american cars weren't up to the Japanese standards at that time.
if the bike is in pristine condition it would be worth more as an accurate example of an AMF model. if it's not pristine, there's a good possibility all the bad things have been replaced(as in my 73)

I kind of understand what your're talking about. My father had a Montgomery Ward 125 cc motorcycle and to this day I wish I had it in my garage because it would probably be worth a mint.

Hmmm I'll ask him tomorrow, he gave me the xlh/superglide info. I know nothing about bikes since my 1969 honda z50A :)

Thank you all-

If its the AMF brand, even alot of the hardcore Harley riders I've ran across shun those years, they don't particularly like the AMF years. I do have a friend that sold his 2000 Sporty last week for $3500. And the Sportster is about the least expensive Harley you can get in their lineup. Unless you come across one of the old SXT125 or 250 Trail bikes AMF/Harley made around 77'.

Its worth what someone is willing to pay for it, lol. AMF suxs, but there may be colectors who are willing to pay more then others people.

I would place it on ebay with a reserve on it, The ebay community will bid on it, and that will determine the price. iwould be happy with anything over 2500 to tell you the truth.
Right not in this economy , you will not get the top dollar for such a bike. I see newer bikes selling for less then I would have thought they would sell for.
Good luck.

contrarily, those bikes were built with shovelhead motors and are very popular especially with guys building custom bikes can easily get 5,000 given the shape.
