What type of fluid to use in GL1200 clutch

hi everybody i'm trying to find out what kind of fluid goes in my clutch on my gl 1200 if it is brake fluid then dot what thanks for all your help

Pretty sure it's DOT 4. It should say on the top of the master cylinder cover. If you have chrome aftermarket or similar and it's not on there, check the rear master cylinder under the right side cover. Whatever it says on there the whole bike will use.

you use dot 4 brake fluid.

Dot 4 is specified. Valvoline makes a synthetic that seems to work just fine and it's easier on the paint.

a friend of mind gave me a 1984 goldwing aspencade as a wedding gift.the hydraulic clutch isnt engaging.i was told it may need dot4 because its been sitting up a while.honestly i dont know much about this bike.where and how do i put the dot4 in?

The fluid reservoir is right by your clutch handle on the left hand handlebar. You may need to bleed the system. You can download the service manuals from the FAQ and Reference forum.

That's a good friend. Before you get into ripping things apart, try bleeding from the top. The clutch resvervior ison the left handlebar. There is a rubber boot towards theoutside of the reservior. Put the bike on the center stand and then wrap rags around that boot. Pull the boot back and open the nut inside just a touch. Pump the clutch lever gently until a little fluid comes out and then lock that nut back inplace. Clean off all the fluid (it wiil eat the paint and plastic). Thenstart the bike and try the clutch. They tend to form an air bubble that sits right inside that area when they sit for a long time.Mine did that a few years ago. About 1 minute and my problem was fixed. You should drain the system and clean out any gunk before refilling and bleeding, but taking out any air may tell you that the system still works.
