What's in the box?

My '96 1500 seems to be getting a bit louder. The sound seems to be coming from in front of the mufflers. Not like a hole or bad gasket, just more sound from the collector. So, I got to wandering, does anyone know what's inside the collector box?

Has anyone had their collector rot out?

Thanks,

John

Its just an expansion box and they tend to get thinner as they rust from inside and get noisier.

They're made of some easy-rot lead-weight replacement steel.
I had a guy make a 2-1-2 replacement pipe for about £150 (I can't remember exactly but it wasn't expensive) which made no difference to how loud the 1500 sounded, weighed a lot less and will last forever.

Mine is sounding a bit like an empty tin can. I thought it may have some baffles, or something.

If the collector box is a 2 into 1 into 2 arrangement, why does the left side smoke on startup, and not both sides equally?

Good point John.

I have mine off because I had to change out the headers. I will look at it more closely this weekend when I work on it.

Do you leave your bike on the side stand overnight?

this might be causing the smoking on startup, put her on the center stand and see if that helps with the smoking at startup.....
