Who issues your drivers licence?

I just renewed mine today and guess where?

Here in the fiefdom of British Columbia Canada I had to go to ICBC (Insurance Corporation of British Columbia) which is a Crown Corporation meaning that the Gubernment has little control over it other than seeing that the books balance.

This is the same Crown Corporation that is ripping off motorcycle owners for insurance.

This is the same Crown Corporation that is spending billions of dollars paid for insurance on road improvements(?).

This is the same Crown Corporation that is spending billions of dollars paid for insurance on traffic enforcement.

I hope none of your Gubernments go down this slippery slop in the name of saving you money like ours did.

Ours is issued by the State of Wisconsin, after one pases both a written and road test; I think the minimum age is 16. Liability insurance, however, is mandatory. I think they are issued for eight-year terms, and one can renew without retesting IF one has a clean driving record. Mine will expire next year, I think. :waving:
Im not sure I would want my insurer to issue my license, let alone all those other things you mention. Why are they allowed to be so controlling? Do they just make their $$ from Insurance premiums?

Seems like it would be a conflict somehow. Have they ever Not Issued a license due to insurance claims or failure to pay for insurance?

That is the case.
A fellow where I worked hit a parked car while drunk and until he pays for the damage he can't get a drivers licence.

Ah,the delights of what's left of Pax Brittanica
Our licences are issued by State Transport depts for up to 5 years, but 3rd party personal accident insurance is available from commercial companies, billed on the vehicle registration notice from the transport dept & paid to that dept. ie can't get rego without 3rd party ins. ins premium is regulated by the state so there is little variance in the cost of the compulsory cover. Of course, the state then levies stamp duty on the insurance just for good luck

ps got a shock when registering the gl1500. Rego rates are on number of cylinders - effectively same as car rates
hit a parked car while drunk
I don't think they should let cars drink!
I get mine from the guy in the trench coat on the corner of 6th and J st. Fifteen bucks if he pastes in my picture. $12.50 if I do it myself, but that voids the guarantee.

6th and Jst you say.
Could you be a little more Pacific or would that void your warranty?:sadguy:

6th and J, not 6th and Pacific!! That's where I buy my insurance!!
We used to get them from Montgomery Wards, but since they went out of business...?
Does the J street guy have a cousin in Arizona?
Heck, in AZ your driver's license doesn't expire until you're 65 :raspberry:. They do make you update your picture every 12 years... what an inconvenience .

Mine's good until 2050.........

Great legacy left by Capt Bligh! Considering we only use 6" of the road it is getting ridiculous:wtf:

:bow:For the benefit of those not in the know, "Bligh" was the name of our former Queensland State Premier - any resemblance to the actions of the 4th governor of New South Wales (aka of the Bounty fame) has not gone without note

I wish they did this in the USA. A sober person hit my car, and because they had no insurance, it cost me over $500.00. No recourse for me, but to pay. The other guy got off scott free. Driving while drunk should carry a very stiff penalty.

Ken just wait, if the NDP get in they can go into overdrive and push government into more corners of your life.

Ken,

Hodgy's right. We've had the NDP here for 13 years now. The province is in total disarray with the government having no idea of how to get themselves out of the mess they created.
Our motorcycle insurance rates make BC's look cheap, MPIC (public insurer) controls licensing, registration and insurance. Government runs annual deficits in the $500 million range and routinely scoops insurance profits for general revenue. And just last week they announced an increase of the PST. Stickler is that there's a law requiring a referendum prior to any tax increases. Their solution? Change the law.
Most unfortunate thing is that when the NDP won office from the PCs the province was running surpluses with a hefty rainy day fund on the side. The NDP exhausted the rainy day fund prior to 2008 and now we have no fall backs. And are they tightening their belts as you and I would if our household were overspending? Not a chance.
Just giving you a heads up before you elect an NDP government into your paradise.
I have a couple more years of working for the Man and then I'm thinking I may just move into Hodgy's back yard on a permanent basis. Was thinking about a retirement move to BC but an NDP government would sour that idea.

Oh, to be that lucky! My motorcycle insurance rates are several hundred dollars more than those on my Honda Accord. And I can only ride my bike about 5-6 months of the year.

And my rates are not pro-rated, meaning I pay the total annual rate over 5 months. No putting plates on in spring and removing them in fall to save some cash.

No matter where you live, there's always someone with a sadder insurance tale living someplace else - until you live in the socialist infested jurisdiction I do. We have the dubious distinction of having the most expensive motorcycle insurance in the world.

Lawrence there is room in Alberta for you. And if you want to work you can get a job anywhere. Employers love "mature retired people" and hire them on the spot. Mature workers are low maintenance, show up for work when required and take instructions well.

Oh, incase you forgot ----> there is no PST in Alberta.

4 year license here, issued by the State of Indiana for $40.
I do have a CDL, and M/C endorsement, so that made the cost a little more.
Just renewed last week. They expire on your birthdate. Mine is 4/27

And you see a problem with this? :wtf:

Lets say if he hit your bike? You would want a speedy reimbursement wouldn't you?

What if he would have hit a person? Maybe your kid? Bet your tune would have been different. Drunk driving is 100% preventable.

I turned in my own brother for drinking and driving. When he got out the next day I put him in the hospital for 9 days with broken limbs. I purposely broke both of his collar bones. He had a to have his butt wiped by a nurse at his apartment for 10 weeks. I have ZERO regrets for doing it.

You have never had a life ripped away from you like this. I have. Ripped the young ladies hand right out of mine when the car hit her when we were out for a walk.

He was a repeat drunk driver. 100% preventable. Guaranteed he (your co worker) will do it again.

Sorry for the rant but do you even understand the gravity of your statement? That punishment is a joke!

Understand that this rant is not directed to you or at you Ken... just the system and the drunks attitude toward it.

Tim.

Yes I do.:lash:
It should be up to a court of law whether he ever drives again not his insurance company.

I of course agree that penalty's for drunk driving should be harsh but here in British Columbia we even have that bass ackwards. If a law enforcement officer charges you with drunk driving part of the punishment is immediate, you loss your licence for 90 days and your car is impounded at your expense. If when you get your day in court it's proven the officer was in error "to bad so sad".
