Why so Loud!!!!

I was out for a nice ride, stoped at a little bar for lunch, a nice greasy burger and fries, When three guys pulled up on harleys, They were really loud, but the funny part was all three guys got off their bikes and pulled out their ear plugs,:gunhead:

So my question is Why would you have your bike so loud that you need ear plugs, I don't mind a nice rumble to the exhaust, but some are just a little excessive. maybe you guys could explain it to me, because I just don't get it:?

Happy riding

In the AMA magazine there has been an ongoing series of responses to one of the editorial colums about "Loud pipes save lives". I too appreciate a nice rumble, but maybe this is an alternative to working horns and daylight running lights.

On the other hand, I prefer the loud pipes to having my car windows rattled by some-one elses version of music.... :action: :gunhead:

yeah there's nothing wrong with a nice rumble, but I also agree with other peoples radio, I don't mind loud music, but some of the stuff people play, all I hear is the trunk rattling, and I agree loud pipes save lives, because if you can't be visible be loud, but if you gotta were ear plugs thats to damn loud

Huh yea say something.. hearing isnt what it used to be.. lol

Interesting that over here wearing ear plugs is par for the course, most riders have them as part of their kit, we are told by those who know better that engine/wind noise will damage hearing over prolonged periods of riding, i.e. when touring. Interestingly, from the conversation thread, this doesn't seem to be the practise on the other side of the pond.

Different cultures GreenWing. It's the same with helmets, riders in the no-helmet states will defend their right to not wear a lid with their very lives. Over here it's not really an issue with most bikers. We are all bikers, we just live and ride in different environments.

You have got to be joking!! You wear plugs on a quiet bike.

I have never worn plugs on a bike and never will. If the bike is to loud get some baffles. If you get to much wind noise get a new helmet.

I have to wonder about the safety aspects of wearing plugs. My feeling is that when riding you want to get the maximum benefits of all your senses. Thats way the stereo on my bike has only ever be turned on 2 times. Once to see if it worked, the other to show my wife that it worked.

Over the water here in some of these states wearing earplugs while riding could earn you a fine.

Incredible!, ear plugs are standard over here and considered a vital protection to hearing, altough I must admit that I don't see a lot of folks on Goldwings using them, but some do. Those that ride other bikes anddon't have the wind/noise protection of a windshield will wear them as standard.

Some wear them to cut down on the fatiguing wind noise. The guy from EdSets ( http://www.edsets.com/ ) advises wearing them. I tried it and don't like it.

Although getting used to ear plugs is a personal decision, you may be surprised to find all of the things that you can hear with ear plugs that you cannot hear without them. By blocking certain ambient noises such as wind noise, other sounds are more noticeable and by blocking ambient noise a rider can greatly reduce fatigue which may result in a more alert and attentive rider. Many lifelong motorcyclists have experienced hearing loss later in life even though they never rode "loud" motorcycles.

The issue of loud pipes saving lives has been disproven statistically, scientifically, and through common sense. They do not. The short version:

Most of our hazards approach us from the front, the noise from loud exhaust travels to the back.

The low pitch of loud exhaust does not allow other motorists to determine direction. Low pitch sounds are not located by the human ear easily, which is why placement of the subwoofer in your stereo system is not as critical as the placement of the tweeter. It is also why sirens and horns are higher pitch - we can tell where they are coming from.

The constant noise from a loud exhaust is far more likely to distract the rider, cause fatigue, and prevent them from hearing approaching hazards around them than it is to alert other motorists. Anyone who has ever worked in a loud factory can attest to the effects of noise and it's relation to fatigue. A distracted, fatigued rider is far more likely to be involved in an accident than an alert attentive rider. This is true for multi vehicle as well as single vehicle accidents.

The only concrete result of loud obnoxious exhausts on motorcycles is to foster a negative image of motorcycles with the general public. As a result we are likely to see more and more restrictions on motorcycles, which will prevent them from accessing certain areas and ultimately prevent (eliminate)motorcycle accidents in those areas.

Actually in some states using earplugs is illegal. It's believed you won't be able to hear emergency vehicles. I can't imagine why anyone feels they need them if they have a 3/4 or full face helmet.

As for loud pipes I think it has something to do with p***s envy, mine's 'louder than yours'. All it does is turn lots of people against bikes in general. As for increasing safety I don't believe it, probably gets people peed off enough to want to cut them off on the road.

I wear a half helmet and have been thinking about trying earplugs to cut down on the wind noise. I wear them at work and don't have a problem hearing the conversations, etc. They do a great job cutting down on the ambient noise though. At 45 I've got some hearing loss from my younger days of concerts and the "hearing protection is for wusses" attitide and would like to preserve what I've got left. I suppose I could just get another helmet, but I like this one and besides, earplugs are cheaper!

Probablytrue with the loud pipes.

As for the ear plugs, I'm not sure on the legalities, however you may be surprized just how much you can hear with ear plugs. Emergency vehicles can still be clearly heard (high pitch sirens carry very well), and when at highway speeds I can often hear sounds that I'm unable to hear without the plugs. The main reason I like wearing earplugs is that I find a tremendous difference in fatigue over longer rides. With the wind noise associated with highway speeds (over 100dba with most helmets, and those are the good ones) See this article under the heading "Noise Levels", the very last section of the report: http://www.mcnews.com/mcnews/articles/helmet.htm

Loud pipes DO get you noticed , visibility is everything, when I ride out with my Harley pals the traffic moves out of the way, thy hear the bikes coming , they hear a rumble , they wonder what it is and they start looking around them, this is not statistics or science it is simply experience.

On the old science front - high pitch sirens are almost impossible to pin down for direction, in tests conducted for the UK fire brigade they determined that a low pulse rather like an enormous fart wasexcellent for pinpointing dirction. they tested the siren interspersed with the fart and found it very successful - the siren tellsthe motoristthere is a problem and the fart tells you where it is coming from. If you wish to test this try farting at an inopportune moment at say a quiet moment at a dinner party , see how many people look at you.....:D[ not very scientific]

Anyone who defends their right to not wear a helmet makes a clear choice - and one day will have their head examined....:gunhead:

I was a Boiler Technician (steam plant operator) in the Navy for twenty + years.

I wore my ear plugs as described and I can tell you for a fact, "It is easier to hear certain types of things, like speech when surrounding "white" noise is removed ie wearing plugs.

PS: I cant still hear a needle dropping after all that time a sea! Never-ever failed a hearing exam!:cheeky1:

I wear ear plugs every time I ride.My hearingsurvived 25 years as an aircraft mechanic because I wore ear plugs and ear protectors (or headsets). I'm not about todestroy my hearing by not wearing ear plugs on the bike.

The plugs block the noise that can destroy hearing, but don't block what's important. I've never failed to hear an emergency vehicle or a car horn. At the gas station orotherwise stopped I can still carry on a conversation.

If you hear ringing in your ears after a long ride, you could be doing irreparable damage.
