When I installed a Lee's Starr (Vetter Style) fairing on my 1977 Gold Wing, I used 16 AWG wiring and connected inside the headlight pod. The wiring harness that came with my Lee's Starr fairing was basically plug and play and I connected all the wires inside the headlight nacelle. After connecting all the wiring, I was still able to keep the headlight bulb installed (but it was not functional).

I would add, to use the crush type wire connectors or better yet, solder the splices. I would not trust the splicers that break through the insulation.
