Wobbly ignition on GL1000

608 Views 3 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  tribologist
I been having issues with my 78 GL1000 with poor running engine in the midrange. Tonight I took the left belt cover off and I marked the pulley with all the firing points and the max advance points and I made a pointer for reference.

What I found was somewhat confusing. Overall the ignition is jumping around quite a bit. From the movie it looks like it varies about 4-6 crank degrees on the front coil pack between the two cylinders but the rear pack is right on but there the full advance mark jumps. It seems to me that it jumps more than the back lash I can notice in the belt.

Please look at this and let me know twhat you are thinking.

Sorry, That sounds rude. When did you first notice this problem????
It has never been very good in the midrange. It was terrible when i got her last spring but after rebuilding the carbs and doing a full tuneup it has been drivable.

I took the carbs out last week and cleaned and checked everything and also checked the valve lash and it is fine. I did not recheck the compression but i will as soon as i get my tester back. I did check it last fall when i started to chase this issue and it was very consistent between the cylinders.

The previous owner had a Dyna III on it at some time but the points were back in when i got it. Im tempted to buy a Dyna S but im going to fight a little longer first.

Thinking about it it is not really "wobbly" its basically the "split ignition" issue illustrated.

What would really help is experience from someone else that looked at the valve train with a strobe like this.
