Hi guys,

Puzzling problem today; hope you have some ideas....

Wason the road for about 45 minutes - half the time in 1st gear as I was caught in a traffic jam. Temp outside = about 85 degrees F. I stop the bike for a minute at a ferry... try to start it back up in neutral and the engine barely turned over. Tried again and then nothing! Meanwhile, all the dash lights are indicating I still have battery power.
I gave the bike a roll and jump started her. Got home 30 minutes later....tried to repeat the problem and everything is fine now! She starts right up. However, the only difference nowis I am hearing a "pop" from the spark plug area each time she starts up.

She has 33k miles; complete tune up with all fluids changed and new plugs at 29k.

Thanks a lot....

UPDATE:The bike has cooled down since I last started her about 3 hours ago.Started her up again moments ago; no problems. Now the "pop" is also gone. What's going on?

I can't help you but was wondering where in Seattle did it get 85 today??? Not even in the 70s over here.

Felt like it wasactually hotter than 85 here this afternoon. My wife and I were sweating on the bike as we sat parked in the traffic on I-5.

Batteries can act very strange and do wierd things?

How old is the battery? Sometimes the "lights" do tell the truth?

I've talked with friends who have to get a new "Wing" battery evry 2 years max ?

I have to change mine about every 18 months, but I live in the hot desert?

The pop is puzzling me?
PS, I've never owned a 1500, but guys that do like to put a "Compu-fire" Alternater on,check it out!?

I bought the bike 2 years ago. Not sure ifthe previous ownerreplaced the battery since1998... I have never thought of buying anew batteryfor her til now.

Sounds to me like a typical HOT soaked starter. Might need new brushes and a good cleaning. I don't know if the newer wings are susceptible to that or not but I would think so.

As a starter I'd disconnect and clean the battery and cable terminals, ditto the cable attachments to the starter relay and the starter itself. A little corrosion can add enough resistance that the starter won't crank the engine but the lower current drawers like instrument lights and the voltmeter will. I'd also suspect the starter relay itself. Take a good look at the main 30A fuses, the link type fuses can cause these odd happenings.

BTW fatalattraction, it got to 76F here in Spanaway south of Tacoma, I wouldn't doubt that it could have reached 85 in some of the sheltered areas on that concrete slab!

Well over here in "Sunny Sequim" we didn't see the sun until nearly sundown. sigh.

For your "popping" sound, check the torque on the spark plugs... they could be bit loose.

For your battery/starting problem, check to make sure the acid/water level is topped off. These charging systemscan boil off electrolytevery rapidly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water if it's low. A battery a little low on electrolyte can be abit weak.

As others have said, check for corrosion on the terminals.
