For your "popping" sound, check the torque on the spark plugs... they could be bit loose.
For your battery/starting problem, check to make sure the acid/water level is topped off. These charging systemscan boil off electrolytevery rapidly, especially in hot weather. Add distilled water if it's low. A battery a little low on electrolyte can be abit weak.
As others have said, check for corrosion on the terminals.
