Wow wow wow! Runs like new

I had internal air chamber gas leaks + external + flooding. Today, I bought a new OEM air chamber gasket, installed it, along with putting my old OEM fuel seals in each carb, replacing the 'honda rebuild' poor solution of putting flat fuel seals in the carbs, which leaked badly.

I bolted it all up and tested for leaks with an IV type bottle setup feeding into the carb fuel inlet. I kept the float bowl cover off the flooding #1 carb to check the float valve. Sure enough, when pushing up the float to close the valve, no leak. So, knowing the valve seat and needle were good, i just deduced i needed to readjust the float to seat properly on the valve pin at the spec setting of 21mm. Also, no more leaking in the air chamber or externally from the carb bodies!!!

The bike now starts up great, pulls like a bandit, and idles dead even! Wow, like new. I'm so pleased and am really proud of myself for my hard work, research, and careful troubleshooting. I've learned tons, and didn't break down and give up and take it to the mechanic. Thanks for all your help!!

Mag, I will be hitting you up for suggestions/advice in the near future, as I am planning on doing the carbs on my 79. /forums/images/emoticons/cool.gif Hope  you don't mind dispensing with it!I'm a little confused about what you did with that IV... You had the carb off of the bike and injected fuel with the IV to check float level? Also, my carb plenum to air chamber gasket is a bit wonky, too. You think a new one made a big difference?

I'd be glad to pass on what i can, Sanfelice. I had three problems:

1) Air chamber gasket was leaking -- gas would seep into the air chamber (main carb plenum). Solved by buying a new OEM gasket and putting it in.

2) external leak from carbs -- wrong type of fuel seals/o-rings in the carbs, where each carb joins the plenum. I took the old seals which were in good shape from my other carb set.

3) Incorrect float setup in carb #1.

I hung a large funnel from the rafters in my garage. The funnel has a shut-off valve on the spout. I connected a clear piece of 1/4" tubing and ran it into the fuel inlet of my carbs, which were off the bike, resting on a bucket. By letting gas flow into the carbs, i could see whether the gasket in the air chamber was leaking gas, look for external leaks underneath, and also manually operate the float in carb #1 to see if the float valve was leaking when i shut it off by hand.

Hope this helps!
