Bike/cage accident today

When I first acquired 'Pearl' in June my neighbor down the block sort of 'adopted' us; he's been riding for decades and has a gorgeous custom bike that he's spent years tweaking and chroming...we were leaving the complex for a quick ride to the art fair and George flagged us down, reminded us to stay alert ("because the world needs more Lerts") and away we went. The fair was good and the ride there and back uneventful, until we roll into the driveway and my cell phone rings. It's my neighbor, calling from the hospital. Apparently, he and his co-rider opted to take the bike out for a run up to the in-laws for dinner, but enroute he was surprised by a cager making an unannounced left turn from a two-lane highway...the SUV in front ofthem swerved onto the right shoulder to pass the fool...leaving George with nowhere to go and no time to stop. The EMS transported both riders to the hospital, wherehe was treated and released...his co-rider was undergoing aCAT scan at the time that he called. He just wanted to let us know what had happened, and to make sure we'd arrived home safely. We're stunned by the news, but so very grateful that everyone involved survived.

I've been thinking about the two of them all evening and had to write it all out. I'll be calling them later this morning, and will have a bouquet and a card delivered while I'm out of town for the next few days. It's amazing how everything can change in the blink of an eye.

Sorry to hear about your friend and neighbour, please pass on best wishes from here over the Pond. :waving:

How right you are about how things can happen so suddenly, a timely rminder for us to take the utmost care. Doesn't sound as if he had a chance on this one, and it goes to show how vunerable we all are, despite our best efforts.

Here is looking forward to good news from you soon about their recovery. :clapper:

Always hate to read about such things but happy they are OK. Wonder how his bike faired.
It must be pretty badly damaged...he couldn't bring himself to talk about it, but I expect to hear from them today. He's quite the raconteur, so I'm anticipating more details to share with you-all. Thanks!

Best wishes for them.

Come to think about it... every event like that I have experienced like that came in the twinkling of an eye. Sunny day, meteorite kind of thing.

Try to stay as alert as you can out there. There is no real calm water.

I've got to admit, I've been a very lucky biker over the years. The only time a car took me out, was in a municipal car park !

I was only a kid, about 20 I think and full face crash helmets were pretty novel then. I'd got one, and I didn't see the car that got me. He actually drove in via the exit, and hit me side on... I was knocked out, and he'd taken a fair bit of skin off my ankle.

He was fine, but we both ended up in the ambulance, on route to the hospital. Apparently, he'd got a bad ticker and the shock of not killing me must have put a strain on his heart....

At hospital, ( they knew him well,Hope Hospital, Salford, Lancs, UK,) they said, Don't worry Mr Harris,he's only a biker !!!

I remember that vividly.... How times don't change..........

Firstly I hope your friends make a speedy recovery. The world is full of numpties in cars and we who choose to ride bikes need to be even more alert today. Secondly, don't speak too soon Kev, I had ridden for over 26 yrs without incedent until May of this year when a cager tailended me throwing both Linda & myself 30plus feet through the air and totalling my 1500. I still have not had the insurance claim settled and am still without a bike. What I am trying to say is that with all the muppets on the road, the unmentionable can happen to anyone of us no matter how safe we ride.

Sorry to hear about the accident.

Accident Hell, All Left turn Accident Cages should be shot on Sight.

But seriously, I w3ish him the best and hope for many happier times.

I have been riding on the street over 40 years now and I always say that this is the most defensive sport there is.

Beats lacrosse, Soccer, Football, Rugby and most other sports barring the running of the Bulls.

In this sport you have to control your ride and watch the guy in front and behind and the oncoming lane. All while subconsciously having an escape route in mind at all times.

The scenarios run through your mind constantly. If this clown does this, I will go there.

After a few years it becomes second nature. But there still are surprises and they WILL fly up and bite the unprepared.

And even being prepared is not the total answer.

But We LOVE to ride and it makes up for all the above.

But I still hold a special place in my heart for the fool that turns left in front of any Bike.

Good Luck to all ad ride safely.

Update on George's accident: both he and his wife are home and doing fine, no lasting damage. The bike is still rideable, right side saddlebag took the brunt of the impact and there's other scratches and scrapes but (amazing to me) there appears to be no operational issues with the bike and it's being repaired...George is ready to face the world on two wheels again, but I'm not sure if his co-rider feels the same way.

Thanks much for your support and kind wishes...this is why I'm so glad we joined the "cycle society"!

Pleasedto hear the news, the bikes can be mended, but not the people so easily, so I am glad to hear that they were not hurt worse.

Give them our best wishes and tell them to buy a banana coloured Wing, so they will be seen better!!!!:clapper::clapper: :cheeky1::cheeky1:

Oh,,, and whilst they are recuperating, they could be signing up and posting on here in their own right!!!:D:D
