There is a big primary chain in there. There's no way it can be going out at 80k miles. Is it possible that's 180k?

Anyway, that chain rides on a spring steeltensioner that has no adjustment and I heard of that losing it's spring. Usually at much higher mileage.

My chain didn't start making noise until about 200k miles. I've been told it can make noise for a long time before it becomes an issue.

You have to crack the cases to get at that chain, BTW.

Your noise may not be the chain, though. Make sure the bike is running smoothly. Carb sync can make the 12 motor sound like it's dying. Also, a loose clutch can make a lot of noise.

Can you isolate better where the sound comes from? Left or right side, front or rear? I doubt that is a chain, primary or otherwise. One thing that comes to mind is the u-joint which can sometimes click when slowing down. Check this by putting the bike on the center stand and rock the rear wheel back and forth both in and out of gear and listen for sounds at the joint. ( Once you determinethe area that the sound comes from it may be easier to diagnose the problem... ) GM

What kind of an issue will a loose chain cause???

The bike has 78k miles to date... this started a year ago after I replaced the rear end... I'm going to check the u joint as was suggested... Thanks for your time and valuable advice... later

You say this started after you changed the rear end. Did you grease the spline AND the hub pins? This could also be something as simple as a component left off the rear brake assembly or a loose rock guard or plate on the caliper. Hope it's not your u-joint.

U-joints dont usually fail that early but sometimes they do. If the noise started right after you changed the rear end thanI would definetly start my search at the drive train........

Might also be something amiss with the output shaft.

A long time ago, I read something in the Honda manual...about pre-loading something...when installing the drive shaft. Now I can't find it.

Smart guys...help.

I greased everything that went backtogether, the ckicking seems to come straight down from me when riding... I will check(reading) the output shaft instructions... I remember just lubing it and sticking it back in...

i dont know how the 1200 is set up but i had a clicking sound on deaccelertion and found it to be the speedo gear on the front tire was ticking lubed it with pb blaster and it works just fine now
