GL1500 Reverse acting up

I have a question about my reverse on my 95 SE. Lately if I put it in reverse and press the starter button the bike dies. Ive also noticed that when I'm idling that my lights are dim. Not sure if the battery is going and this is causing the issue with the reverse or not. I have a Compufire Alt that is about 4 years old and the battery is the same age.

Any ideas or suggestions on what to check for as far as the reverse not working? I'm debating on buying a new battery to see if that is the remedy to the issue.

It does sound like a low voltage condition. Take the battery to a parts house (Autozone, O'reillys, etc) and get them to test it. They can tell if it is any good. Also put a voltmeter on the battery terminals and see what the charging voltage is at about 2500 rpm. It should be somewhere around 14 volts.
