I understand that the overdrive on my 94 gl1500 se is 5th gear. Got that. The indicator light on the other hand does not always light up when in that gear. Is there a set speed for this to happen, or do I need to look into it as a potential issue. Bike runs/rides fine currently.

The overdrive light bulb gets power from the ignition switch (as does the side stand light, oil pressure light and a few other lights).

If your side stand light and oil pressure lights are working, then you have power to the overdrive light bulb. (no problem here)

The overdrive light bulb is grounded by the gear position sensor (when in 5th gear) (no problem here)

You either have a faulty bulb socket or a faulty bulb.

You may only need a new bulb. (start there)

If you get to the point of replacing the bulb, you should plan on replacing all of them, some here have been using LEDs to keep from having to do it again anytime soon.

^ Yup.
Start with the bulb. LED replacements are about $3 each give or take, but not mandatory.
