rear right shock leaking again........ strange?

I re-built the rear shocks this winter (back in january). Have been able to put a few hundred miles on the bike this last couple of weeks. The right shock was leaking when I got the bike. So,, with gamblers great post about rebuilding,I did so. Everything went fine, the over-all condition of the shock was good and no rustand cleaned up fantastic. All surfaces were clean and free of anything rough or rusty. Blew out the old seals on both units and replaced, 10.5 oz of atf, new boots. Re-installed the shocks and pressured up the sysytem, everything OK. Has held same airpressure since the initial airing up, and still is....... haven't had to adjust once in three months. This mornig I see an oily substance on the tire...... sure enough, oil from the right shock again? I took very good care on taping the ends and lubing everything as not damage the new seal on install. Do you think it would be good to put a slight film of silicone sealant around the outside of the seal when installing? 9not on the inside taht slides up and down) Can't think of why it is leaking again.......................not leaking from the top of the shock. It's gotta be the seal? Seals were from service honda..... so I think they were quality parts. Left shock is running dry and was all along........ just redid it sinceI had things broke down.

Your thougts are welcome.

:waving:did you all so put new boots on ? if not maybe there was something in the boot.. just a guess at this point . it maybe possible that there is a split in the boot that let some thing get to the shaft and cause the seal to leak. like i said--just a guess.

Hi Wda-83Wing..... yea, I put new boots on too. The PO had a shock repaired from what I know.... was probably the leaker as the boot looked newer than the other. Now that I think of it. The old seal didn't look that bad. But a seal can look good and be bad. Is it possible to get a shock that just won't seal? I mean EVERYTHING was clean.............. nothin' looked bent or out-of-line.

if the seal did not seal, then I suspect you may have a bad shaft or a bad housing... it is possible, though, that the seal got buggered when you put it in... and no, do not put silicon sealer on it

:waving: dancinbear---i guess it is possible that--either the seal was bad --or--the shaft has a bad or flat spot or even a bend in it . in any case---i would try a new seal and see if it still leaked . if so replace the whole shock . just my thinking on the matter .

Today it's dry again........... road 150 miles. We'll see if it weeps over-night. yea...... I'll probably try another shot at it if it persists. If that don't do it......... maybe have to explore other avenues.
