Iwould liketo adjust the steering head bearing on my '98 Goldwing. How much of an ordeal is it and can someone give some direction.

You will need the correct tool (or homebuilt tool ) and a torque wrench . The handle bars need to be removed and the top fork clamp removed to get at the adjusting nut . Of course all thats under a small amount of tupperware . I am not at my service book just now but can later add the torqe values and sequence . It has several steps of tighten then loosen and retighten . Perhaps with using the existing bearings you can simply do the procedure in one step as opposed to the ritual for replacing the bearings.

Ok have the book now .

1 tighten the stem nut to 40N-m ( 29 ft lbs)

2 turn stem lock to lock 5 times

3 loosen stem nut to finger tight

4 then retighten to specified torque (specified is 19 N-m /14 ft lbs )

5repeat steps 2,3,4

6 repeat 2 and 4 a third time , ( do not loosen the adjusting nut )

7 ALWAYS use a new lock washer ( for the lock nut )

8Hold the adjustment nut and hand tighten the lock nut to align its grooves with the lock washer tabs.

after installing the bridge ( top clamp ) in place torque the stem top nut to 100 N-m (72 ft lbs )

Aftere all this adjusting Mother Honda says the preload on the bearings should be in the range of 1.8-2.2 Kg ( 4.00 - 4.85 lbs for right and left turns .
