VTX 1300 Running Problem

A friend as a 2003 VTX 1300 that has a running problem when he takes off it has no power and pops and stalls, he can pull the choke out just a little and it runs about 85% better, pushes choke in at idle and idles great. Top speed is 75 mph and it feels like it runs out of fuel. We replaced fuel filter, fuel pump, fuel petcock/screen and sparks plugs, we also drained carb.with no difference. Any help would be great thanks.

This happened to the bike I am referencing at around 27,000. I have heard of this happening more than once on this forum.

Granted - I'm taking about a GL-1200, and you a VTX-1300.

But it sounds like something like that.

Does it have aftermarket pipes or aftermarket breather installed? Could be a stopped up main jet or too small main jet. The 2003 vtx had a fuel pump but you could bypass it and just let it gravity feed. 2004 and up didnt have a fuel pump. If its aftermarket pipes and/or breather then someone could have installed a dyna-junk jet kit in it. If it is a dyna-junk then get rid of it and install a Factory-Pro kit. Check out VTXOA.com there is a lot of good information on that site for the VTX.

Clogged up/maladjusted main jet...
Unless as noted above, someone changed it out. Or aftermarket pipes were installed without proper carb set up.
Former VTX 1300S pilot. (And MAN did I love that bike)
Had virtually every bolt and nut off and on at one time or another. Very reliable bike, just like to tinker, and of course BLING!
Popping is a sign of lean condition.
Pulling out the 'enrichener' (Choke) dumps raw fuel into the carb, so it runs better. Running with the choke out will foul your plugs. Try some seafoam. Also, if the bike is stock, the factory sets them up VERY lean! The main jet is 'D' shaped. A .22 cartrige, bent on one side will work to turn the jet. Start at around 2 and 1/4 turns. Should be real close. Also as someone said before VTXOA is a GREAT site!

PS: I have VTX service manualsburned toCD.....$15 ?

I have complete near new seat with all hardware....$100 ?

I have misc other VTX stuff...ask

I'm crazy about mine also, 68,000 on the clock, only had to have the stator replaced, along with regular maintenance.

What McToy said........ air/fuel mix screw on bottom left side carb. D adjust tool needed or bent empty 22 casing. Turn in clock wise till seats, come back out (counter clockwise) 2 turns. Start engine, turn out counter clockwisr till engine runs rough, then, turn back in till running smooth. Can get at it from left side without removing air cleaner if you have flex D tool..... a mirror helps find it.
